Pain Management How can physical therapy help me manage pain

Most patients that we see at the Pain Clinic are. Patients that have back pain. And patients that have multiple joint pains. And leg pain. And fibromyalgia. Physical therapists are really coaches. In helping the patient. Understand the safe way to move the safe way to strengthen. And that it's okay. To feel muscle pain when they're strengthening because that's a good thing. That makes the patient know that at least they are

Having some benefits of their exercise program. An evaluation of the patient's posture. Muscle strength their muscle length looking at what's type and what is weak and what strong no one person I think is more important than the other.

So it's the sum of all of us together with the patient being the center of care to have us. And I know that sounds simple. But. We are one of the biggest institutions in the nation. So we can draw

From the smartest and the most compassionate people and those are the people that we have on our team. I am very passionate about what. I do. I don't think that children should be in pain. And. I. Want to make sure that they have.

Pain Management Chronic Pain vs Acute Pain

Acute pain is, for instance, a broken arm stepping on a thumbtack pinching your finger in the door. Something that happens. And has a reason that you can easily identify. We have chronic pain and the pain is started to take off and have a life of its own.

It starts to affect you in different ways. Areas of the brain that are saying Shut pain down. Aren't as active anymore. And areas within the spinal cord and the brain that they feel this more intensely. Are more lit up. And so even though the x-ray might get better after that broken arm my arm may still feel broken because now it's gone underground. If I lean on a hot stove

Or if I go and sprain my wrist. The message is to protect me. You're being harmed

And all pain is explained in some in either term of actual or potential harm. So it's trying to protect us. But. If all that processing change has gone on and now the pain's there but the bonus healed

That message doesn't mean anything. It's just getting in my way. Is making me miserable but it doesn't tell me anything. Medications work by hitting what we call receptors. Think of it as a key in a lock on a door. All right. If you go to the front. The door of your house you've got a house can you open it you put it in the door and you turn it on you go in. That's like a medication for acute pain like morphine going to a morphing receptor. And doing its job. When I describe the change between acute pain and chronic pain that chemistry in the nervous system changes. And so now the locks that you need to open up. Have changed so that the morphine or a similar medication might be really strong when the lock is opened by that key but over time when things have become chronic and now someone has changed the locks on you. Using the same key isn't where you need to go.

How to Eat to Build Lean Muscle

The pressure to increase the loose body mass is looking for a diet to put body mass or protein. You're probably wondering how much do I need. And how do I choose to increase the protein body massively? Well, keep in mind when you're looking at losing weight or increasing your muscle mass you need to have a variety of foods because a variety of foods provide a variety of nutrients both macronutrients and our micronutrients, for instance, are vitamins and minerals. A well-rounded diet of your whole grains fruits vegetables lean proteins and low-fat milk will overall help you have a healthy diet just good for any overall health as well. Now our body does lose weight in a combination of fat and protein so when reboot rebuilding protein is working it out we do need to supplement good proteins as well. And I do stress the low fat or fat-free dairy products as well as your lean and low-fat cuts of meat. Now our body really only needs about point eight grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.

You're saying what's the kilogram will take your weight in pounds and divide it by two. That's roughly a kilogram. And to just round up even if you want your body weight you can do a guess at half of your weight in pounds and then multiply that just by one of the amounts of protein. And like I said that's really all the amount of protein you need to try not to go overboard with the protein supplements and shakes as well as incorporating regular dietary protein. And keep in mind we don't get protein just from our animal sources. You do get some a little bit from your vegetables as well as your whole grains to get it from a lot of different sources. And also if you're increasing your protein make sure to increase your fluids as extra protein does put some strain on filtering organs in our bodies such as our liver and kidneys and that extra fluid will help alleviate some of that stress. Hopefully, you can find some good happy medium in there. Keep a moderate well-rounded diet and also choose those healthy proteins and supplements in your diet. I'm Charlotte and eat happily.
